野立岩
野立ち岩の高さは約10メートルで、地元の言い伝えによると、100人以上が一度に立つことができる。1600年、近郊の宇都宮の大名が、会津藩へ北上する道中、側近らとともに塩原を通った。宿泊施設が無かったため、彼らはこの巨石の上で一晩野営した。その結果、皮肉かもしれないが、野立ちの慣習にちなんでノダチと名付けられた。この言葉は一般的に、 貴人が地方へ旅行する際に野外で摂る休憩を指していた。

Nodachi Rock
Nodachi Rock is about 10 meters high and according to local legend, more than 100 people can stand on it at once. In 1600, the lord of nearby Utsunomiya passed through Shiobara with his entourage while heading north to the Aizu domain. Lacking proper accommodations, they camped for the night on top of this massive boulder. The rock was, perhaps wryly, named nodachi, a term that normally referred to an open-air rest break that high-ranking persons might take during a pleasure trip to the countryside.
