Toba’s Marine Life
The waters of Toba are home to an abundance of marine life that has long supported a vigorous seafood industry. The rocky reefs, seaweed beds, tidal flats, and beaches of the region provide habitats for abalone, spiny lobster, and many other sea creatures.
The Toba Aquarium is home to more than 1,200 different types of sea life, some 30,000 individual specimens in all. Displays categorized into 12 different natural zones introduce the various undersea environments of the waters off the Shima Peninsula. The aquarium is internationally recognized for its expertise in the rehabilitation, care, and breeding of rare marine species from Japan and around the world. It houses the only Asian dugong to be raised in captivity in Japan, along with finless porpoises and endangered sea otters.
