ウミウシの不思議な世界
ウミウシ－あまり知られていない竜串湾の美
ウミウシは通常は海底に見られる無脊椎動物です。日本近海には約1,400種類のウミウシが生息しており、うち384種が竜串湾に生息していることが知られています。
ウミウシは貝の一種
ウミウシは外見はナマコにたいへん似ているかもしれませんが、実際には、らせん状の貝殻の中に棲む、カタツムリに似た巻貝の方が近い部類です。
あまりよく見えない
ウミウシは視力がとても弱く、明るいか暗いかがわかるだけです。
あらゆる大きさ
多様な一団であるウミウシの体長は、1ミリから50センチ以上までさまざまです。
「海の牛」とも呼ばれる
日本語の「ウミウシ」は「海の牛」の意味です。触角が牛の角に似ていることからの命名です。

Sea slugs are invertebrates that are usually found at the bottom of the ocean. About 1,400 types of sea slugs live in the waters around Japan, and 384 of these species are known to inhabit Tatsukushi Bay.
Sea slugs are a type of shellfish
We may look much like sea cucumbers, but are actually more closely related to the snail-like conch, which lives in a spiral shell.
They can’t see very well
We have very limited vision and can only make out whether something is light or dark.
They come in all sizes
We’re a diverse bunch, ranging from 1 millimeter to over 50 centimeters in size.
They are also called “sea cows”
In Japanese, we’re called umiushi (“sea cows”) because our feelers resemble cattle horns.
