Enjoy the Waters
Kamikatsu is blessed with plentiful water. There are sweetfish to catch in the river, waterfalls with powerful auras, and cool streams perfect for cooling tired feet.
Katsuura River
The Katsuura River runs through the center of Kamikatsu. There are many good fishing spots along its banks, like the Tonokawauchi Valley for red-spotted salmon (amego) and the area around Tsukigatani Onsen for sweetfish (ayu). Local shops sell live ayu to use as decoys for catching ayu in a traditional decoy fishing technique called tomozuri. The area near the Yurayura Bridge has a little-known spot to rest in the clear, shallow waters.
Asahi River
This is another good fishing river. A hand-dug tunnel was built to connect the Asahi River in Yaeji to rice fields in Nojiri some 12 kilometers away during the Edo period (1603-1867). The irrigation system is still functioning today.
Lake Bishu
This lake was formed when Masaki Dam was completed on the Katsuura River in FY1977. Lake activities include kayaking and fishing.
Kanjogadaki Falls
This 80-meter waterfall is found on the way to Jigenji Temple. The refraction of the sunrise through the spray forms a rainbow, adding a splash of color to the scenery.
Hyakken Falls
There is a walking trail that leads to the waterfall basin, which has views of the 30-meter waterfall.
Fuigo Falls
The basin at the foot of the falls is surrounded by rocky cliffs, adding to the power of the scenery.
Onbuchi and Menbuchi Falls
The roar of falling water fills the air at Onbuchi Falls, while further downstream the diminutive Menbuchi Falls can be seen from the trail.
Amadomari no Fuchi Falls
This waterfall is just around 10 meters high, but has an unusually large basin.
