Kesennuma Oshima Island
Kesennuma Oshima is the largest inhabited island in the country’s northern Tohoku region. It was only recently connected to the mainland via a bridge, making travel to and from the island much more convenient. It has a circumference of 24 kilometers, much of which can be hiked on a section of the Michinoku Coastal Trail that circles the island. The highest spot on the trail is 235-meter Mt. Kameyama, with an observatory that commands a superb 360-degree view of the entire island and much of the adjacent ria coast. Other attractions include Kodanohama Beach, a white sand swimming beach, and Cape Tatsumaizaki, a rocky promontory on the southernmost tip of the island.
