Japanese white eye / Zosterops japonicus / Mejiro / メジロ 体長10~12cmの鳴鳥は、北日本では渡り鳥として、奄美大島などの南部では留鳥として生息している。頭部や背中、翼は鮮やかなオリーブグリーンで、喉は黄色で、灰色の腹を持つ。目の周囲の白色部が、名前の由来になっている。群れで行動することが多いが、長年パートナーと共にいる。メジロのつがいは、縄張り意識が高く、オスはメロディーのような大きな鳴き声で、テリトリーの主張をする。餌は昆虫や幼虫、果実などを食し、種子の散布や花の受粉に重要な役割を果たす。
Japanese tit / Parus minor / Shijukara / シジュウカラ 日本全国に生息する鳥で、特徴として頭は黒く、頬には白い斑点があり、黒いネクタイのような模様が喉から尾にかけてある。翼は濃いグレーで、背中の部分は黄緑色。鳴き声は甲高いよく通る声で、10種類以上の音を持つ。

This small (10 to 12 centimeters long) songbird is migratory in northern Japan, but resident in more southern climes like Amami-Oshima. Its head, back, and wings are bright olive green, contrasting with the yellow throat and grayish belly. The bird gets its name from the white ring around each eye. It is frequently seen in flocks, but partners bond for several years. Couples are very territorial, and the males use their loud, melodic voices to mark their spaces. They feed on insects and larvae as well as berries, and play an important role in dispersing seeds and pollinating flowers.

This is a common bird found throughout Japan. Its distinctive design features a black head with white patches on its cheeks and a black “tie” running down from the throat to the lower tail. The wings are dark gray and the back has a yellowish-green tinge. Its song is high-pitched and loud, with over ten different notes.
