Take no Michi Bamboo Road
Eight types of traditional bamboo fences line Take no Michi, which means “bamboo road.” The 1.8-kilometer path was created in 2000 to preserve and promote the natural scenery of Nishiyama, an area famous for bamboo groves. Signboards along the road provide photos and descriptions of the fences in English and Japanese, as well as maps indicating where each style can be found. The fences demonstrate both the versatility of bamboo as a construction material and the skills of the artisans who have passed down fence-making techniques for generations.
The latticed kofungaki fence is characterized by bold, rounded edges to match the shape of Terado Otsuka Tumulus, the ancient burial mound (kofun) behind it. The kaguyagaki fence made with neatly trimmed branches and thick, precisely cut bamboo stalks is meant to resemble the collar of the layered court attire worn by Princess Kaguya from Taketori monogatari (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter). The mozumegaki fence with tightly fitted horizontal and vertical bars of bamboo was inspired by the walls of Mozume Castle, the site of which can be found to the northeast. Tall bamboo grows robustly beyond the fences, creating a quiet, contemplative atmosphere around Take no Michi. In October, bamboo lanterns are placed along the road to illuminate the landscape in the evening.
Those who want to learn more about bamboo are encouraged to visit Kyoto Bamboo Park, located near the midpoint of the Take no Michi road. The vast complex includes a museum with educational displays, a garden with around 110 species of bamboo, and a shop that offers various bamboo products and souvenirs.
