Shiga Prefecture was one of the first places in Japan to cultivate tea, starting in the early ninth century when a Buddhist priest brought back tea seeds from China. The Koka area now produces around 90 percent of the prefecture’s tea. The gift shop carries a range of locally grown teas, along with tea flavored confectionery.
Koka’s climate is also ideal for rice cultivation, and there are a number of sake breweries in the area. The gift shop has a variety of locally brewed sakes, and the staff will be happy to assist in making a selection.
The town of Shigaraki, which has a pottery-making tradition dating back over 800 years, is part of the Koka municipal area. The local clay and availability of abundant firewood make it ideal for the production of pottery, and Shigaraki ware is prized throughout Japan. A selection of pottery is available at the gift shop, including the famous statues of tanuki (Japanese racoon dogs). These statues are a signature product of Shigaraki and a popular symbol of good luck.
