It is difficult to dig traditional wells at the top of the mountain and transporting water from below was inefficient (and during a siege, impossible) so cisterns like this one were carved out of the rock to collect and store rainwater. If the castle came under attack, these extra stores of potable water made it possible for the defenders inside to survive a prolonged siege.

山頂で伝統的な井戸を掘ることは困難で、下から水を運搬するのは非効率的であった（包囲の間は不可能）ので、そのため貯水槽は岩をくりぬいて雨水を貯めた。 城が攻撃を受けた場合、飲料水の予備的な貯蔵は、城内の味方が長期的包囲でも生き残れることを可能にした。
