Ni no Torii Second Torii Gate
The second torii gate stands on the approach to the main shrine of Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Torii are generally made of wood, although some are made of stone, metal, or other materials. They are normally painted bright vermilion, but they may also be left unpainted.
The second torii gate marks the entrance to the most sacred area at the interior of the shrine. The komainu statues in front of this torii gate watch over worshippers and protect the approach.
The carriage house is close to the Ni no Torii gate. Worshippers would leave their horses or carriages here and proceed on foot to show respect for the kami of Kasuga Taisha Shrine.
