Fifth Floor
Central Columns
The keep’s two central columns extend from the basement to the fifth floor. The round east column was made from a single 25-meter-long tree trunk, while the square west column was made from two lengths of wood expertly joined together.
Reinforcement
Not long after the keep was built, the east column began to buckle under the weight of the building. Additional support beams were added over the years, but by the time the keep was renovated in the mid-twentieth century, the top of the column had shifted 37 centimeters.
