Lotus Petals


Behind the Daibutsu are four large bronze lotus petals. In the middle of the Edo period (1603–1868), a project was begun to install a “lotus-flower throne,” a set of lotus petals around the platform on which the Great Buddha sits in meditation. However, the project was abandoned after only four of the petals had been completed, most likely for financial reasons. The names of each petal’s donors are inscribed on their surfaces.


蓮弁

大仏像の背後に青銅製の大きな蓮弁4枚を見ることができます。江戸時代（1600-1867）のいつ頃かに蓮弁が大仏の座る蓮台を囲むように制作するという計画がなされました。その結果は仏が蓮台に座るという一般的なものになるはずでした。しかし、結局計画は白紙となり、今私たちは4枚の完成した蓮弁しか見ることができません。寄進者の名前は表面に彫られています。計画の白紙の主な原因は経済的要因だと考えられています。
