Kakkonda Gorge and Genbudo Cave
Testimony to volcanic activity long ago, the rock pillars found along the Kakkonda Gorge are phenomena known as columnar jointing. These six-sided pillars form during the cooling and solidification of lava, when hardening lava contracts and cracks. The Genbudo Cave at Kakkonda, also known as Kakkonda no Oiwaya, was designated a Special Natural Monument. Unfortunately, it collapsed in an earthquake in 1998, and today the cave is off-limits to visitors.
