Wetlands and Conifers
In this area, forests at high elevations, like those around Onuma Pond at 944 meters, generally consist primarily of Japanese beech. In the harsh environment of these wetlands, however, Maries’ fir, northern Japanese white pine, and other conifers are prominent.
Ahead, a northern white pine has been toppled by the elements, exposing its roots. This was most likely due to exceptionally strong typhoon winds, compounded by the tree’s position in the damp soil of the wetlands.
