Nuno Falls
This site derives its name from the word nuno, meaning “cloth.” The white cascade of water coursing through a narrow opening in the rock is said to resemble a cloth draped over the stone. Nuno Falls developed where two types of rock meet: hard andesite rock and a softer, sedimentary rock called green tuff. The softer rock has been gradually worn away by the water, creating this dramatic cascade.
The falls can be seen up close from the viewing platform on the Yashio hiking trail. From there, it is easier to get a sense of the scale and intensity of the falls and to see the border between the andesite and green tuff. Nuno Falls is known as one of the “Ten Falls of Shiobara.”
