舎利殿、絵殿
舎利殿は鎌倉時代（1185–1333）に建て替えられた御堂で、仏舎利が納められている。この舎利殿と絵殿は、もともと聖徳太子縁りの品々を保管する蔵であった。それが平安時代に改造され、西側が聖徳太子の生涯を描いた絵画が壁面にはめ込まれた絵殿となり、東側が舎利を納める舎利殿となった。「舎利」という言葉は、火葬後の仏の骨を指している。法隆寺の多くの建物と同様に、この建物も神話に包まれている。ある伝説によれば、舎利は聖徳太子が2歳の時、南無仏と唱え合掌をしたその手の中から生まれたとされる。なお舎利殿で大切に保管されてきた太子ゆかりの宝物と絵殿の障子絵は明治時代に皇室に献納され、そのほとんどは現在、東京国立博物館に所蔵されている。

The Shariden is a Kamakura period (1185–1333) hall containing a collection of relics of Shakyamuni Buddha. The word “shari” refers to the bones left after the cremation of the Buddha’s body. According to legend, the shari contained in the Shariden sprang from the hands of Prince Shotoku, then aged just two, as he brought his hands together in prayer.
A roofed passage connects the building with the Picture Hall (Eden) next to it. A rare surviving painting on silk, illustrating the life of the prince, which once hung on the walls of the picture hall, is now in the Tokyo National Museum.
