狭間
姫路城の壁には997の狭間がある。縦長の長方形をした狭間は矢狭間、もっとコンパクトで正方形、円形、三角形をした形の狭間は鉄砲狭間であった。穴は3つの違った高さに位置していて、それは立ったまま、ひざまずいて、あるいは横になった位置でそれぞれ撃つためであった。狭間の形や位置が一律でないのは、実用性と見栄えの両方の目的のためである。

Loopholes
There are 997 loopholes built into the walls of Himeji Castle. The tall, rectangular slits were for archers, while the more compact openings—the squares, circles, and triangles—were for gunners. The holes are placed at three different heights for firing while standing, kneeling, or lying down. The loopholes’ different shapes and positions served both practical and decorative purposes.
