姫路城の巨大な石造りの壁の上部には、土と石膏で作られた胸壁がある。ほかの城では、このような胸壁はたいてい木造のフレームもしくは土壁に似た技術を用いて造られている。姫路城の胸壁は、補強と耐火を目的に漆喰でコーティングされた固い土で造られた。

Parapet Walls
Himeji’s huge stone retaining walls are topped with parapets made of earth and plaster. At other castles, these parapets are often built with a wooden frame or using techniques similar to wattle and daub. At Himeji, the parapets are made from solid earth coated with plaster for additional strength and fire resistance.
