Hot Springs Are Gifts from Volcanoes
Many tourists who come to Japan intend to visit one of the numerous hot spring resorts during their stay. Japan’s hot springs are famous, although the reason there are so many is less well known: the country is also full of volcanoes, and wherever you find one, you are likely to find the other. Melting rain and snow seep into the earth and become heated deep underground; when this hot water is forced back up to the surface, the result is a natural hot spring.
Shikotsu-Toya National Park has a number of hot springs, and you should definitely make time to visit at least one. It is a pleasurable experience you will not soon forget.
