Wainai Shrine was built in 1908 as “Shoryo Shrine.” The name was changed in 1933 to recognize Wainai Sadayuki (1858–1922) for his success cultivating himemasu salmon in Lake Towada. Wainai is enshrined here, along with his wife Katsu. Every year, two festivals celebrate this couple and their important contributions to the Towada area: in spring on May 3rd to commemorate the day Katsu passed away, and in autumn on September 21st, the date of Sadayuki’s death.
