Worshippers at the shrine place monetary offerings into the large box with wooden slats. This is a relatively new introduction at shrines. In the past, the bounty of the sea and land, such as rice, would be offered to the kami. This was also a way of expressing gratitude for harvests. As the use of currency spread, money also started to be offered at shrines instead of rice.
