The base of Gifu Castle was built with rough-cut stone. This type of masonry is called dry stone construction and is very common in the ancient buildings of Europe and the Americas. The castle’s base is the shape of a trapezoid, which improves the structure’s stability during earthquakes. Although the lower sections date to before 1600, a new keep and much of the stone base was rebuilt around 1910, when Gifu was reconstructed as a tourist attraction. This new keep was destroyed in the firebombing of WWII but was rebuilt out of concrete in 1956.

岐阜城の基礎部分は、石垣になっている。 この様式の石積み工法はは乾式石造工法と呼ばれ、ヨーロッパやアメリカの古代の建物では非常に一般的である。 城の基礎部分は台形の形をしており、地震の際には構造上にも安定性が向上する。 下の部分は1600年以前のものであったが、1910年頃に岐阜が観光名所として再建されたときに、新しい城と石垣の基礎の多くが再建された。 この新しい岐阜城は第二次世界大戦の爆撃で破壊されたが、1956年に鉄筋コンクリート造りで再建された。
