Zaimoku Iwa
Literally meaning “timber rocks,” the term zaimoku iwa refers to the rock formations in this area that look like stacks of timber. They are composed of andesite and are the result of columnar jointing, a geological structure that forms when fissures develop in lava as it cools and contracts. Some other examples of columnar rock formations are the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland and the Deccan Traps in India. To the south, zaimoku iwa can be found near Nuno Falls. To the north, they extend underground all the way to the Fukuwata Formation near Tengu Rock.
