Summit of Mt. Yadake
This is the top of Mt. Yadake (971 m). The mountain was formed during the earliest period of volcanic activity in Unzen between 300,000 and 150,000 years ago, and is now an excellent spot from which to view the younger and taller mountains to the north.
From here, Tachibana Bay should be visible to the northwest, where the Chijiwa Fault creates a visible line between the Shimabara Peninsula and the rest of Nagasaki Prefecture. To the north are Mt. Myōken (1,333 m), and Mt. Heisei Shinzan (1,486 m). Mt. Heisei Shinzan is both the youngest and the tallest mountain on the peninsula, having erupted as recently as 1995. The peak of Mt. Nodake (1,142 m) is nearby to the east; even farther to the east is the Ariake Sea, which separates the peninsula from Kumamoto Prefecture.
