Bagu Turret
The Bagu (horse harness) Turret is believed to have served as a storeroom for horse tack, though there are no records to confirm this. During the Edo period (1603–1867), a wooden span known as the Geba Bridge crossed the river here. Since the Bagu Turret overlooked an important entrance to the castle—possibly even the main entrance—it could also operate as a defensive position during fighting.
The original structure was dismantled and its stone base converted into an artillery battery in preparation for an insurgent attack during the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877. The current building is a reproduction constructed in 2014. The stone wall beneath the structure buckled in the 2016 earthquake, finally collapsing during the aftershocks.
