Local Tourist Office Musubin
Musubin is primarily Takasago’s tourist information center, but it also houses interesting exhibits related to the city’s history. Displays introduce Takasago’s fame as a Musubi no Machi (“matrimony town”) that long has attracted couples and those seeking blessings for a good marriage, as well as the place where Matsuemon canvas for sails was created in 1785. Exhibits show how the invention of Matsuemon canvas, made of woven cotton, contributed to the development of Japan’s modern fishing industry and to the success of coastal shipping.
The building housing Musubin was erected in the 1700s. It was the office and residence of the Nakajima family who, at the time, operated a wholesale shipping business from the pier opposite the building. In the modern period, the structure was used as a post office. Many items remain from that time, including an old safe and a public telephone booth that is no longer operational. Efforts have been made to preserve the historic characteristics of the building.
A large range of local products are on display in the shop for purchase as souvenirs. The space also hosts events and workshops showcasing local crafts and products. Outside the office are bamboo benches made by local company Bamboo Fam, making a comfortable spot to take a break before exploring the city.
