Works by Tomioka Tessai
Tomioka Tessai (1837–1924) was a painter, calligrapher, and scholar born in Kyoto. He spent much of his later life at Kosanji Temple. Two of his works can be seen in the temple grounds—a stone monument inscribed with the words “Toganoosan Kosanji” and calligraphy that reads “Sekisuiin.”
Tessai was influenced by traditional styles of Japanese and Chinese painting. In 1907, he was appointed the official painter to Emperor Meiji (1852–1912).
