Special Products of Kuroshima
Kuroshima Tofu
Kuroshima tofu is harder and tastes different than normal tofu because seawater is used as the coagulant. Because it keeps its shape, it’s very good for use in hot-pot dishes.
Fukure Manju (Stuffed Sweet Buns)
A simple bun stuffed with bean jam, steamed on a bed of satsumasan kirai (Smilax braceata) leaves.
*Both tofu and manjū are made by the island’s women’s association for celebrations.
Mikageishi
A kind of diorite found only on Kuroshima, of all the Kūjuku Islands. Among other things, it was used for gravestones.
